EU PPWR Regulation Officially Enforced on August 12

Brussels, Aug 12, 2026 — The EU Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) has officially come into force, marking a major milestone for global suppliers exporting packaged goods to European markets.
Under the new rules, strict limits on PFAS chemicals in food‑contact packaging take immediate effect with no grace period for existing inventories. Over‑packaging is also heavily restricted. Any packaging with void space exceeding 50% will be deemed non‑compliant. Violators may face fines up to 4‑6% of their global annual turnover.
Printing and packaging manufacturers outside the EU are greatly affected. Cartons, gift boxes and food‑grade packaging for export must re‑examine raw‑material composition and box structure. Non‑compliant shipments risk being detained at customs or removed from the market.
Industry insiders remind cross‑border traders to verify material certificates and packaging void ratios before shipment. Meanwhile, related eco‑friendly printing materials, recyclable paper and low‑PFAS inks are seeing rising market demand. Many packaging enterprises are speeding up product adjustment to meet EU environmental standards.
